Nationwide Credit Card

Nationwide say that their Gold credit card has a lot to shout about, but how does it compare to the rest?

  • Up to 56 days interest free credit
  • 0% balance transfers (in 3 months of account opening) subject to a 3% fee
  • Free cover for loss, theft or damage to most card purchases over £50
  • Free extra 12 month extended warranty on many electrical products
  • Nationwide ‘Fraud Watch’
  • Typical 17.9% APR variable (13/11/2008)

The Natiowide Gold card comes up well compared to other cards with a decent APR, but the best thing about this credit card is the free 12 month extended warrenty you get with many gas and electrical items. Compared to the price of an additional warrenty, this card could save you hundreds on your first purchase.

However, there are quite a few exceptions that aren’t covered:

  • computer and home office equipment, whether in a home office or not:
    • PC’s and laptops
    • Hand held computing devices
    • Computer peripherals
    • Printers
    • Scanners
    • All in ones printer/scanner/copiers
    • Webcams
    • External hard drives
    • Routers
    • Fax machines
    • Photocopiers
  • Central heating components
  • Home security components
  • Personal communications equipment
    • mobile phones
    • blackberries
    • other personal communications equipment
  • Powered garden equipment
  • Powered garage equipment
  • Goods with a £5000+ purchase price
  • infomation from nationwide.co.uk/switch

Thats quite a few things that aren’t covered, so you’re basicaly left with kitchen equipment, TV’s and audio equipment. That said, it’s better than nothing and has personally saved me when my cooker broke down just one month after the manufacturers warrenty ran out.
If your purchases isn’t going to be covered by the extent warrenty, then you might be better with a cashback card or reward card.
